Research orchard

About the temperate nut research orchard

The temperate nut research orchard was established to look at current and future production systems. The aim was to establish a significant resource for detailed replicated experiments and best practice demonstrations for almond growers with research findings that will translate to other temperate nut crops such as pistachios, walnuts and pecans.

Temperate nut production

Whilst productivity in Australian orchards is comparable to the world’s best, high input costs place Australian nut producers at a competitive disadvantage. To help nut industries stay competitive, research is being conducted at Agriculture Victoria focusing on production systems to improve productivity to reduce costs.  Research in integrated pest management is also ocurring.

The following pages introduce research in areas of productivity and pest management currently being undertaken by researchers in Agriculture Victoria (research sites: Irymple and Agribio, Bundoora)

The concept was developed in 2015, with State and Commonwealth funding secured in 2016 in conjunction with projects undertaken by South Australian and New South Wales state agencies.
