Pear cordon tree training demonstrations

A demonstration site has been developed at the Tatura Pear Field Laboratory using a cordon tree training system.

This demonstration uses a pear cultivar ANP-0534 grafted onto D6 rootstock.
The cordon leaders are spread at 40 centimetres apart.

This is a demonstration of the system often referred to as a cordon training system. It's part, again, of our profitable pairs project, and what we're looking at here is just one variety, ANP-0534. It's grafted onto D6 root stock and what we've done is in the first year we've laid down what's referred to as the cordon, which is this part here. That's our cordon and from that cordon we've actually got our leaders that will remain in place for perhaps up to six years or more from which we will develop our fruiting wood, our expert structures. These leaders, in this particular case, for cordon, we've space them at 40 centimetres apart. The reason for that is that we've found that this variety, ANP-0534 is a very spurry type of variety and it doesn't produce those long, wippy fruiting laterals that you might see on some of the other varieties.
