Spur dynamics - almonds

The Australian almond industry, similar to other horticultural industries, has to contend with season-to-season fluctuations in tree productivity. Spurs are the main fruit-bearing structures on almond trees and alternate between being vegetative or reproductive between seasons. Spurs are further only viable for a few years before dying off. The seasonal dynamics of spurs are for this reason an important factor determining the yield of almond trees.

Agriculture Victoria’s Dr Zelmari Coetzee is investigating the effect of management practices—irrigation water volumes and nitrogen supply—on spur vitality and fertility within trees and across seasons.
