Dr Michael Santhanam-Martin, University of Melbourne, discusses skilled workforce needs in the Goulburn Valley.
The availability of suitably skilled people for jobs across the supply chain is a critical element for success in Australian agriculture, but is also seen as a challenge for the perennial fruit industry in the Goulburn Valley.
A study undertaken by the Department of Jobs, Transport & Resources (DEDJTR) in collaboration with the University of Melbourne found a whole of system approach was required to improve workforce issues, and not just the identification of skills gaps and labour shortages. The study is addressing this challenge through the understanding and identification of business context and capability, entry points to jobs and the career progression pathways for workers in the perennial fruit industry. A range of areas for potential industry collaboration to improve workforce development have been identified.
