In a collaborative project between the University of Melbourne and DEDJTR, a prototype camera system and pilot smartphone app was used to measure the growing fruit early in the season and to predict size at harvest.  This provides an easy and transportable tool for growers to calculate fruit size in the orchard in real time.

The ability to predict the size of fruit at harvest early in the growing season could help growers decide what how much time and money they need to spend on the crop to get high quality fruit that meets market requirements. The pilot app was also used to predict sunburn risk using thermal time (degree days) and extreme heat events, obtained from forecast temperatures.
