About Me

Alex is a Chemical Standards Officer for the Victorian Department of Primary Industries and is located primarily in Bendigo, Victoria.

With more and more focus being put on chemical use in farming, Alex plans to provide a link between industry and the chemical standards group so chem standards may better understand how the horticulture industry works and how they can better service the industry's needs.

Alex originally studied Forensic Chemistry at Deakin University in Geelong, before transferring into Biological Science at Deakin in Burwood.

Alex has recently spent 6 months working in Canberra with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), who are responsible for the registration of all Ag and Vet chems. in Australia.

Skills

Alex brings experience in the following: 

•  Field and lab research experience
• Writing skills – newsletters, reports and information notes
• Regular contributor to Chemical Industry News (CIN)
• Managing the recently completed "Water Rates Used in Horticulture" survey
• Extension work during the 2010 locust response
• Knowledge of agricultural chemicals used in horticulture and the risks associated with their use
• Detailed understanding of residue issues in produce and how to manage the them
